Handcrafted in Niger West Africa. Superb and stylish Tuareg silversmithing. The Tuareg use jewelry for spiritual protection, a custom derived from West African animist traditions. The power of the Tuaregs' four -pointed cross is said to extend to the four corners of the earth. The crosses are made of silver This elegant tribal necklace features cross talisman along with silver tube beads called ismara. There are many designs of cross, one to represent each oasis in the Sahara. Ismara are to contain the goodwill offered to you by those you meet.. Each one varies slightly and is signed by the 'kel ineddan' or jeweller who created it. These silver pendants as 'teneghelt' from the verb 'enghel' that means 'to pour' in reference to the lost wax method of pouring out the melted wax and pouring in the hot silver, the very method of how all silver crosses are produced one by one. Necklace is 8"L cross is 2 1/2" L.
